Olaf Peterson Fell 30 Feet
and Suffered a Broken Leg and Several Bruises
A serious accident occurred at the Black Eagle shaft on the W. H. Black land five miles southeast of this city at 9 o'clock this morning. O. Peterson, a well known Swedish miner and the original discoverer of the famous South Carthage mines, is the victim. He was sinking the shaft on a contract assisted by his sixteen year old son who was doing the hoisting for him.
He was working in a shaft about 20 yards east of the original shaft, and had reached a depth of 31 feet. A shot had been prepared, the fuse lighted, and Peterson stepped hurriedly into the tub and gave the signal to hoist. When nearly to the top one side of the tub caught on the cribbing and tipping to one side, disengaged the hook, and the man and tub went to the bottom of the shaft.
By unexpected good fortune the tub struck the lighted fuse and extinguished it, otherwise the unhappy man would have been blown to pieces. As it is, he is seriously injured, his leg being broken, and his face much mutilated. He was taken to the house of Mr. Wheeler nearby and Dr. Chester summoned. He will recover, unless internal injuries develop. This is the third bad accident at the Black Eagle property.
